Bidwill Trust Hospital backs Aorangi Stadium - an investment in community health

Media release – 11 April 2025

The Bidwill Trust Hospital Board has confirmed it will become a $50,000 Gold Sponsor of the Aorangi Stadium redevelopment, signalling its strong support for the long-term health and well-being of South Canterbury.

Board Chair Sam Hervey said the decision reflects a deliberate demonstration of how the trust views its role in supporting community health.

“We didn’t do this just to get Bidwill some visibility through sponsorship. Rather, we saw it as an opportunity to invest in the physical health of our community,” Hervey said.

“Regular participation in sport improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, and supports healthier ageing. At a population level, more active communities place less strain on the health system and enjoy better overall well-being.”

Hervey said the board considered the growing body of New Zealand evidence linking sport and recreation to improved health outcomes when making its decision.

“Data from Sport New Zealand and the Ministry of Health show that people who are regularly active have lower rates of obesity, better fitness, and improved quality of life. Importantly, young people who participate in sport are more likely to carry those healthy habits into adulthood.”

The $24.2 million redevelopment of Aorangi Stadium will deliver a modern, multi-court facility designed to meet the needs of the district for decades to come. The project is expected to expand opportunities for sport and recreation, attract regional and national events, and strengthen Timaru’s position as a hub for community activity.

Mr Hervey said accessible, high-quality facilities are critical to increasing participation.

“If we want people to be more active, we need to provide the spaces that make that possible. Facilities such as the Aorangi Stadium create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in a variety of sports, whether that’s organised competition, social recreation, or simply staying active.”

He said the benefits extend well beyond individual health.

“Stronger participation in sport builds more connected communities, supports young people, and contributes to economic activity through events and visitors. This is about creating a healthier, more vibrant South Canterbury.”

While the stadium project is already well advanced, a community and corporate fundraising campaign is underway to raise the final $2.4 million required to complete the redevelopment. The campaign will run through to December 2026.

Hervey said the Bidwill Trust Hospital was proud to support a project that will leave a lasting legacy.

“This is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about investing in prevention, supporting families, and creating an environment where healthy choices are the easy choices.

“We are pleased to stand alongside other supporters in helping bring this important community asset to life.”
